Forecast Uncertainties in Macroeconometric Modelling: An Application to the UK Economy∗
This paper argues that probability forecasts convey information on the uncertainties that surround macro-economic forecasts in a straightforward manner which is preferable to other alternatives, including the use of confidence intervals. Probability forecasts obtained using a small benchmark macroeconometric model as well as a number of other alternatives are presented and evaluated using recur...
متن کاملThe Superiority of Greenbook Forecasts and the Role of Recessions
In this paper, we examine the role of recessions on the relative forecasting performance of the Fed and the private sector. Romer and Romer (2000) show that the Feds forecasts of ination and output were superior to that of the private sector for the pre-1991 period. DAgostino and Whelan (2007) ndings suggest that the information superiority of the Fed deteriorated after 1991. Our results sh...
متن کاملCan Weather Forecasters Formulate Reliable Probability Forecasts of Precipitation and Temperatures?1
During the past ten years, many sets of subjective probability forecasts have been formulated on an operational or experimental basis by weather forecasters. In this paper we examine some forecasts prepared recently by National Weather Service forecasters. Samples of precipitation probability forecasts represent an operational program, while samples of probability foreclISts of temperature repr...
متن کاملPredicting Real Growth Using the Yield Curve
The yield curve, which plots the yield of Treasury bonds against their maturity, is one of the most closely watched financial indicators.1 Many market observers carefully track the yield curve’s shape, which is typically upward sloping and somewhat convex. At times, however, it becomes flat or slopes downward (“inverts,” in Wall Street parlance), configurations that many business economists, fi...
متن کاملEfficiently Encoding and Modeling Subjective Probability Distributions for Quantitative Variables
Expert forecasts of quantitative variables in the form of continuous subjective probability distributions are more useful to decision makers than are point estimates or confidence intervals. We present 2 experiments using participants recruited via the Internet aimed at (a) developing methods for estimating and modeling continuous subjective distributions from small numbers of judgments, and (b...
